a firm basis. With the advance of thoracic surgery more cases have come to light and the dangers inherent in this condition have been recognized. Harris and Lewis in 1940 first pointed out the hazards of lobectomy when the presence of an anomalous artery is not recognized, their case ending fatally due to uncontrolled haemorrhage. Two other fatal cases have since been reported (Butler, 1947; Douglass, 1948). The abnormality consists in the disconnexion from the main bronchial tree of a portion of lung tissue, and in the supply to it of a large artery arising from the lower thoracic or upper abdominal aorta. This bronchopulmonary mass or cyst lies within or in close proximity to the lower lobe, more commonly on the left side. Sometimes as

Patterns of Blood Supply and Venous Drainage in Pediatric Intralobar Pulmonary Sequestration: A Retrospective Analysis of 30 Pediatric Cases from a Single Center
Purposes: Intralobar pulmonary sequestration is a rare congenital anomaly that causes nonspecific respiratory symptoms. This report presented our surgical experience for pediatric cases of intralobar pulmonary sequestration in our institute. Methods: Between 2002 and 2014, 30 pediatric patients with intralobar pulmonary sequestration underwent lobectomy. The clinical characteristics of patients...

Pulmonary sequestration is a congenital malformation characterised by cystic, non-functioning embryonic lung tissue with vascularisation of an abnormal systemic artery. They are classified as intralobar (75%) and extralobar (25%) and are more common in the left lung and lower lobes (60-90%). We report two cases of intralobar pulmonary sequestration located in the lower lobe of the left lung whi...

as an area of nonfunctioning abnormal lung tissue which receives its blood supply from a systemic artery and characteristically has no connection with the tracheobronchial tree.2 About 70 percent of all the reported cases are of the intralobar variety.' The abnormal lung tissue in the intralobar type is located within the visceral pleura of a pulmonary lobe, whereas the extralobar form is like ...

14 cases of intralobar sequestration of the lung are reviewed. There are 3 different patterns of clinical and radiological symptoms. Angiography is of great value in establishing the diagnosis and defining the anatomic details of the anomalous blood supply, allowing careful planning of the surgical procedure, which was a lower lobectomy in 12 cases. Segmental resections were feasible in 2 cases...

Pulmonary sequestration refers to lack of normal airway connection and aberrant vascular supply, and it may be either intralobar or extralobar. Bronchial atresia involving the lower lobes, especially the left lower lobe, is often associated with aberrant systemic arterial connection, forming an “intralobar sequestration” in which a region of parenchyma is functionally isolated from the remainde...

Surgical resection in mmspected intralobar sequestration can result in fatal hemorrhagic complications. The roentgen criteria for establishing tbis diagnosis are: 1) chronic and recurrent pulmonary Wtrate; 2) most often located in b a s k segments of the lower lobes; 3) multiple cystic areas; 4) failure of contrast media to enter the cystic area during broncbography. We studied two cases of int...
